A spotted owlet peering from a tree hollow in the Dang forests, Gujarat

The Forest Owlet is one of the rarest birds in the world, with fewer than 1,000 individuals left. The Dang, Vansda and Purna forests of southern Gujarat hold a critical but threatened population, facing rapid habitat loss and human disturbance.

We are partnering with the Voluntary Nature Conservancy to combine science and community action for its survival, working alongside the Adivasi communities indigenous to these forests.

How the work runs

Through targeted surveys, habitat modelling and local Owl Watcher training, the project aims to map the owlet’s distribution, reduce the threats against it, and embed conservation in the communities that share its forest.

  • More than 50 targeted surveys conducted
  • Three to four key conservation zones to identify and protect
  • More than 30 local Owl Watchers to train
  • More than 25 awareness programmes delivered annually
